Meet Maxwell Kane, a mathematics major who plans to study and conduct research in economics.

“Math fits perfectly with my goal of developing the patterns of learning necessary to succeed in my later studies, and hopefully make a difference in society,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell, who is minoring in political science and economics, currently serves as a tutor and as part of the lead staff at , where he is able to utilize the skills and knowledge from his studies.

“The analytic approach that I’m being training in allows me to see an issue from many different perspectives, which is invaluable in my work as a tutor,” he said. “Different students will respond differently to the possible explanations of a concept, and it’s important that I be able to switch between them appropriately.”

Maxwell also shares his passion for math through his participation in the .

“I’ve volunteered for and Preview Days, giving me an opportunity to explain to prospective students why I’m so passionate about math, and hopefully get them interested as well,” he said.

Maxwell’s original intention was to study engineering at Â鶹AV.

“After my freshman year, I to mathematics, and have been extremely pleased with both the caliber of instructors and the rich community within the math department,” he said.

Maxwell is so impressed with the instructors that he says they are his favorite thing about his program.

“My favorite part of the math program at Â鶹AV is the professors, who are extremely encouraging and helpful both inside and outside of class,” he said. “Whether it’s asking for guidance for graduate school, research, or just a random question about math, I’m always confident that I can find many professors who will be eager to help.”

In addition to the academic aspects of his experience, Maxwell has also enjoyed the camaraderie the University provides.

“My favorite part of studying at Â鶹AV is the community of friends and classmates I’ve built up since arriving here,” he said. “Almost all math majors know each other and are friends. Additionally, I’ve been able to make friends beyond the walls of Maxim Doucet thanks to the minors I am pursuing. It’s been deeply gratifying to have so many smart, committed students to study with.”
